Job Overview
The Personal Care Attendant, under the direction and supervision of registered staff, provides direct personal care to the resident, in a manner that provides for independence, support, comfort and care.
As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the PCA will assist with all aspects of the residents’ activities of daily living (ADLs) as required and will advance quality of care, safety and the experience of people we serve.
Responsibilities
Clinical Operations:
Provides support and/or assistance to the residents to meet their needs and expectations as per the residents’ individual plan of care in the activities of daily living, including but not limited to personal hygiene, mobility, toileting, eating.
Provides support by maintaining the cleanliness and neatness of resident living area, ensuring the resident’s equipment is safe and functional.
Accurately measures weight, height, intake and output and documents on Point of Care.
Accurately measures Vital signs as delegated by the team Leader on the home area.
Communicates all changes in resident status to the Team Leader and accurately completes documentation on POC to reflect the care delivered.
Improves the residents’ optimum functional ability by providing restorative care processes in the specific personal care area using assistive and adaptive measures as ordered.
Quality, Safety and Experience:
Promotes person-centered approaches to care by supporting a resident living environment that is comfortable and safe and provides privacy, dignity, individuality and safeguarding of personal choice.
Attends in-services for personal growth and skill development and keeps informed about new and relevant information related to best practices.
Facilitates team building and promotes change and innovative ideas.
Performs personal care consistent with The Kensington Health Centre policies and procedures including but not limited to: Fire Safety, Occupational Health and Safety and adherence to the Resident Bill of Rights.
Continuously monitors and improves the quality of the care provided in conjunction with the Kensington Health Strategic Plan.
Responsible for working safely in compliance with accepted safe work practices, procedures and legislated health and safety standards.
Responsible to use and wear the equipment, protective devices and personal protective equipment as required; report hazards, accidents, and the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device; attend all required health and safety training; and follow all established safe work procedures.

Human Resources:
Fosters a workplace free of violence and harassment and promotes workplace safety.
As a condition for continued employment in the home, attends all mandatory education sessions or alternatively completes them on the online learning website each year as per The Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007, Reg. 76(7).
Seeks out opportunities to maintain competency and to continuously learn, taking an active role in continuous quality improvement.
Facilitates team building and promotes change and innovative ideas.
Communicates and assists in problem solving and in the improvement of processes and systems.
Be flexible in the event of an unforeseen staffing shortage.
Attends KHC community and cultural events whenever possible.
Financial and Material Management:
Provides input into the need and use of equipment and supplies required for residents.
Ensures health-related equipment and supplies are well-maintained and sufficient in number. Provides input to the ADOCS as to needs identified.
Provides input to nursing management team when exploring new purchases of supplies and/or equipment to augment current practices.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Abilities:
Proficiency in oral and written English, interest in working with the elderly, work rotating shifts.
The ability to speak both official languages is an asset.
Ability in any other language is an asset.
Required Knowledge and Experience:
One year experience in a long-term care facility (preferred) and medical certificate of good health.
Required Professional Designation/Certificate:
Grade 12 certificate and Personal Support Worker certificate with a minimum number of hours as outlined in the Long-Term Care Homes Act.
